2009 Wellington Jazz Festival

Another round of applause for the first Wellington Jazz Festival! What an extraordinary four days it was with some of the world's greatest musicians in such an incredible environment. Crowds flocked to the Civic Square free stage, the Mingus Big Band had the audience on their feet in the Michael Fowler Centre and if there was any more energy in the Pacific Blue Note, it would have combusted!

Over 75 artists from a dozen countries around the world

Featuring traditional and contemporary jazz, as well as the very best of blues, gospel, soul, latin and more, the Wellington Jazz Festival demonstrates how far the roots of jazz stretch into so many of the musical styles and genres we enjoy.

The inaugural biennial festival, held from 5 - 8 March 2009, took place in four venues in central Wellington, including the purpose-built jazz club the Pacific Blue Note, in the Wellington Town Hall. Audiences were spoilt for choice with exclusive performances ranging from the godfather of neo-soul Roy Ayers to Nouvelle Vague's singing star Mélanie Pain, and from 'the Polish Miles Davis' Tomasz Stańko to New Zealand's own soul diva, Whirimako Black.
